Renting a car has become easier than ever and the prices have gone down also. When needing to hire a car, there are many things to consider. You want a car that will meet your needs without breaking your budget. Always be sure to ask about additional rental charges that could affect the bottom line. You don’t want any surprises when you go to return the car rental.

Additional rental charges that you may incur include high mileage, additional driver, premium location and collision damage waiver charges. High mileage charges are incurred when you go over a specified amount of miles during the rental period. This should be spelled out in the rental contract you sign when picking up the car. Additional driver charges may be incurred when using certain rent a car companies. You may be charged for a second driver or this charge may only be incurred when more than two people will be driving the rental. Another fee based on age is known as the young/mature driver fee. If you are under twenty four or over seventy years of age, many hire a car companies will add a surcharge as the risk of an accident increases with these age groups.

Premium location charges may be incurred when using an airport rent a car company. Be sure to ask when making your reservations so you don’t have an unexpected fee upon arrival. Other charges that you may incur whichever location you use are collision damage waiver charges which transfers liability from you to the rental company for any collision damage. There may still be some charges that you are responsible for so be sure to read the contract carefully. Also, when making a reservation with a car hire company, ask about any fuel surcharges you may incur. These vary between companies so do comparisons on car hire companies.

More charges that you may be responsible for include one way rental charges and equipment charges for such items as child safety seats. If you need to pick up or return a car outside of normal business hours, ask about this service and see if there are charges for choosing this option. With any of these charges, your contract should clearly spell them out so read the fine print before signing. If this car is being used for the vacation of your dreams, you don’t want it ruined by a large bill upon return of the car. On the other hand, if this is work related, your company may not pay additional charges. It’s always better to know these things beforehand.
